Twinfield P&L and trial balance in plain English
The trial balance does not have to come from the reports menu. Here is how to request your Twinfield figures in plain English, with the bookings behind them.
Where was that report again? Anyone who needs a trial balance or profit and loss statement in Twinfield clicks through menus and filters and waits for the report to be ready.
With an AI connector on your administration you skip that whole process. You ask your question in plain English and get the figures back per period and per general ledger account, with the option to immediately drill down into the underlying entries. That applies to the profit and loss statement just as much as to the balance sheet and the trial balance.
From a reports menu to a single question
Through Twinfield AI Connect you connect your own AI assistant, such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot or Perplexity, directly to Twinfield. The connector works with MCP, the open connector standard for AI assistants. Every answer therefore comes straight from your own administration.
For reporting one thing is decisive: Twinfield already keeps the general ledger totals per period and per account itself. The connector reads those totals directly. A profit and loss statement is therefore not a report you create and retrieve later, but the answer to a question: which revenues and costs were there in period 6? The same goes for the balance sheet and for the trial balance, the overview with debit and credit per general ledger account that many accountants start every review with.
How the connection works technically is explained in our explanation of the Twinfield connector. For now what matters most is that you do not have to install anything in Twinfield itself: you log in, grant permission and ask your first question.
How such a conversation goes
How did period 6 go? You type that question as if you were asking a colleague: give the profit and loss statement for period 6 and put period 5 next to it. The assistant retrieves the totals and lists them per account, revenues at the top, below that the cost types, with the result as the final line and the most striking differences between both periods pointed out.
One item stands out. The maintenance costs are considerably higher than a period earlier, so you ask further: which entries are behind that? The assistant shows the general ledger movements for that account with date, description, amount and journal. A double booked invoice, an investment on the wrong account or simply a large but justified expense: you see it without touching a single filter.
As far as we are concerned that is the biggest gain. The report is no longer the end of a search, but the start of a conversation. You can drill down just as easily into bank and cash transactions, creditor transactions or a client's outstanding items.
Compare periods and years with each other
Comparing is where this approach really pays off. Because the totals per period are ready, quarter next to quarter or this year next to last year is simply a matter of phrasing your question differently. Ask for the housing costs from period 1 through 6 and the same periods last year, and you have the comparison without an export file or spreadsheet.
If you want to look wider or further back, for example a trend across several years or all accounts over a long series of periods at once, you use the analysis function. It runs on large datasets and requires your administration to be synchronised for analysis. You will find the function in the trial period and in the analytics variant of the subscription.
Multiple client administrations? Here is how that works
Twinfield is pre-eminently the package used by accountancy firms that manage dozens of client administrations. The connector works in that case too, with one fair note: you ask your question per administration. You select a client, run your check and repeat the same for the next one. A guided workflow, then, not a magic overview across all administrations at once.
The authorisation continues to apply just as you set it up in Twinfield. The assistant only sees the administrations and data your account is allowed to access. And writing, for example creating an entry or reconciling an item, is only possible after your explicit confirmation. The AI flags and suggests, you decide.
Example prompts to get started
Paste these questions into your connected assistant and adjust the period or account to your own administration:
Show the trial balance for period 6.
Give the profit and loss account for this quarter and put last quarter next to it.
Which entries lie behind the housing costs in period 6?
Show the balance sheet at the end of the previous period.
Which invoices are still open with my debtors, sorted by amount?

Frequently asked questions
Yes. The connector reads the general ledger totals that Twinfield keeps per period and per account, so you can request the trial balance, profit and loss statement or balance sheet without creating a report first. In the same conversation you can drill down to the transactions behind a total.
Yes, that is the heart of the design. Twinfield AI Connect is ISO 27001 certified and independently pentested. With Essentials no financial data is stored: your questions go straight to Twinfield. With Analytics the larger analyses run on a secured copy of your administration within the EU, and we delete that copy as soon as you stop.
With ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity. You use the assistant you already know and ask your questions in plain English, no programming needed.
That is possible, for example creating relations, drawing up sales invoices, entering bookings or matching entries, but never unprompted: every change gets a confirmation step first. You can limit write permissions per role or set the connector fully to read-only.
Essentials costs €29 per user per month, Analytics with the analysis function €79. One administration is included; extra administrations fall into a tiered rate. You start with a 30-day free trial with all features and up to 3 administrations, after which it can be cancelled monthly.
