What exactly does Exact AI Connect do?
Exact AI Connect connects your accounting system to an AI tool such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Copilot. Once the connection is active, your AI tool has direct access to your accounting data—securely, in real time, and without any technical knowledge.
Instead of manually running reports, clicking through menus, or creating exports, you simply ask a question. The AI retrieves the relevant data from Exact Online and presents it immediately.
How does it work?
It works the same way for every AI tool: you add the integration link, log in to Exact Online once, and then simply ask your questions. Below, you’ll find the exact steps for each tool, from adding the integration to asking your first question.

Choose your AI tool
ChatGPT
Requires a paid ChatGPT subscription with Developer Mode enabled. Developer Mode is still in beta. For Business or Enterprise plans, an administrator must enable this once.
1. Go to Settings → Apps & Connectors → Advanced settings.
2. Turn on Developer Mode and confirm the notification.
3. Go back to Apps & Connectors and click Create.
4. Give the connection a name (for example, Exact AI Connect) and paste the connection link into the server URL field. Select OAuth as the authentication method.
5. Click Create. You’ll be redirected to Exact Online. Log in and click Authorize. You only need to do this once.
6. Open a new chat, enable the connection via the + menu, and ask your first question.
Tip: Mention in your question that you want to use Exact AI Connect, and ChatGPT will immediately select the correct source.
Claude
Works with all subscription plans, including the free plan. With a free account, you can add one connection.
1. Click your name in the bottom-left corner and go to Settings.
2. Click Connectors in the menu.
3. Click Add custom connector at the bottom.
4. Paste the connection link into the URL field and click Add.
5. Click Connect next to the connector. Your browser will open the Exact Online login screen. Log in and click Authorize. You only need to do this once.
6. Open a new chat and ask your first question.
Tip: You can turn the connector on and off for each conversation using the + button in the bottom-left corner, under Connectors.
Not working right away? Are you using the Claude desktop app? Close it completely (on Mac, use Cmd+Q; the close button only closes the window) and restart it.
Gemini
The standard Gemini app cannot yet add its own connector via a link. This can be done via Gemini CLI (for technical users) or via Gemini Enterprise.
Via Gemini CLI
1. Install Gemini CLI on your computer.
2. Add the connection to your Gemini settings using the connection link as the server:"exact-ai-connect": { "httpUrl": "https://mcp-exactonline.iwebdevelopment.com" }
3. Launch Gemini CLI. You’ll be prompted in your browser to log in to Exact Online. Log in and click Authorize.
4. Type /mcp to verify that the connection is active, then enter your query.
Are you using Gemini Enterprise? In that case, an administrator will set up the connection as a custom data connector using the connection link and OAuth. We’d be happy to help you with that.
Copilot
Requires a Copilot Studio license. You can test it first with a free 30-day trial. Make sure generative orchestration is enabled.
1. Open your agent in Copilot Studio and go to Tools.
2. Click “Add a tool,” then “New tool.”
3. Select Model Context Protocol.
4. Give the connection a name (for example, Exact AI Connect), a short description, and paste the connection link into the Server URL field.
5. For authentication, select OAuth 2.0 → Dynamic discovery.
6. Click Create, then Add to agent. You’ll need to log in to Exact Online once and click Authorize.

Perplexity
Requires Perplexity Pro, Max, or Enterprise.
1. Go to Account settings and select All settings → Connectors.
2. Click + Custom connector in the top-right corner and select Remote.
3. Give the connector a name (for example, Exact AI Connect) and paste the connector link into the server URL field.
4. Check the box to confirm that you understand custom connectors may involve risks, then click Add.
5. You’ll be redirected to Exact Online. Log in and click Authorize. You only need to do this once.
6. In the chat, click the + (Connectors and Sources), enable Exact AI Connect, and ask your question.
Tip: Is the connection already set up but you’re not getting answers from your data? Make sure Exact AI Connect is checked under the + menu before asking your question.
What can you do with it?
Exact AI Connect does more than just answer questions. It reads your numbers, generates reports, and can also set things up for you in Exact Online. Here are a few specific examples:

Troubleshooting
Running into a problem? Below are the most common issues and how to resolve them.
The AI doesn’t recognize the connection
Check that the connection link was copied correctly: https://mcp-exactonline.iwebdevelopment.com. Are you using a desktop app like Claude Desktop? Close the app completely and restart it. On macOS, use Cmd+Q; the close button only closes the window.
You’re getting a login or authorization error
Go to Exact Online and check whether the connection is authorized under your app connections. If not, go through the authorization step again. Is the connection active but not working? Your token may have expired after a period of inactivity. In that case, reauthorize.
The AI isn’t returning any results or is giving empty answers
Check whether you have access in Exact Online to the accounting records you’re querying. Not all user roles have access to all data. First, try a simple question like “Which accounting records do I have?” to test whether the connection is working.
